The majority of us have encountered a rash at some point in our lives, which appeared suddenly and was accompanied by dry and sensitive skin, itching and redness. This condition is called eczema or atopic dermatitis. The shape and size of this type of rash varies from person to person, and its characteristics also differ greatly, because the reasons for its occurrence are quite complex. Many people wonder if eczema is contagious, but we can reassure you right away that the answer is no.
What is eczema?
Eczema is a skin condition characterised by dry, scaly, itchy and inflamed skin. It often appears in childhood and can persist until adulthood. It most often occurs in young children, but it can occur at any age. It most commonly appears in the folds of the arms and legs, the back of the neck, the back of the hands, the tops of the feet and the wrists.
The reason for its occurrence is not fully understood, but researchers believe that it is triggered by an overactive immune response. Dominant triggers include stress, followed by contact with irritating ingredients, chemicals or preservatives found in cleaners and detergents, perfumes, external allergens such as pollen, mould, dust or mites, inappropriate or aggressive skincare products, skin contact with certain materials such as wool, temperature changes, sweating, allergies to certain foods, etc.
In addition, researchers have discovered that some people with eczema do not make enough of a protein called filaggrin. This protein is responsible for keeping the skin moisturised and healthy.
Atopic eczema
Skin with atopic eczema is typically itchy, very dry and prone to irritation. Atopic eczema usually has two phases: an active (or acute) phase and a non-active phase. It is very important that people who are prone to atopic eczema properly protect their skin during the non-active phase, as this helps to prolong the periods between the active phases and, when it does occur, the atopic eczema causes less discomfort.
Eczema can appear anywhere in various forms, but it tends to favour certain places and it is there that it is more often found:
- Atopic eczema on the feet/legs – it can stem from external influences or as a combination of several factors. Dry skin is certainly one of the main causes of eczema on the legs/feet, as it is prone to peeling and itching, especially in winter. When scratching, the skin is easily damaged and becomes more susceptible to infections and the spread of eczema. It is important to ensure regular care of the dry skin of the legs and feet, as this helps to strengthen the hydrolipidic layer of the epidermis, which builds the skin's first protective barrier. For optimally cared for and soothed skin, use a combination of the Pristine Forest Body Lotion and the Soothing CBD Skin Balm.

- Atopic eczema on the hands – a very common condition, including among those who aren't otherwise genetically predisposed to the appearance of atopic dermatitis or eczema. Frequent washing and disinfecting of hands, cold weather and other factors can burden the skin to such an extent that it becomes more susceptible to inbalances, which can result in the appearance of eczema on the hands. In order to keep the skin on the hands moisturised, nourished and protected, we advise daily use of our CBD Hand Cream. In the event of a flare-up of eczema, treat the problematic areas with our Therapeutic CBD Skin Balm, which offers rapid relief for acute skin changes

- Eczema on the face – one of its most prominent symptoms is dry skin. When the skin is very dry, it loses moisture significantly faster and is more prone to changes caused by inflammation, as well as infections. This is why it is so important to ensure the skin on the face is properly hydrated. It most often appears in the area of the cheeks and chin. Careful and consistent care is the key to keeping the skin moistured and balanced. (link na rutino za mladostno kožo). - Eczema on the eyelids – the skin around the eyes and on the eyelids is thin and exceptionally sensitive. This particularly delicate area of the face is characterised by skin that is approximately three times thinner than on other areas of the face. This very fact makes it especially sensitive and prone to dryness and irritation. In the case of eczema on the eyelids, gentle cleansing of the skin is especially important, as well as skincare that should not include essential oils and ingredients that could otherwise get too close to the mucous membrane and cause potential irritation. We recommend a combination of two products that address all of the above. Cleansing Facial Gel gently and thoroughly cleanses without irritating or drying, and Therapeutic CBD Skin Balm calms eczema flare-ups and protects the skin from inflammation and external influences.

- Eczema on the scalp – also known as seborrhoeic dermatitis is a form of eczema on the scalp. It can appear in infants in the form of scaly patches on the crown of the head, but is also common later in adulthood. As a rule, this type of condition is also accompanied by dandruff. A rash can also appear on other parts of the face, such as around the eyebrows, eyelids and sides of the nose. In the case of seborrhoeic dermatitis on the scalp, it is very important to choose a suitable shampoo that targets the scalp. It is recommended that you avoid artificial foaming agents, silicones and synthetic ingredients that could further irritate the skin. At Hemptouch, we have created a Gentle Hydrolate Shampoo especially for irriated scalps, which gently cleans, soothes and restores balance to sensitive scalps.

Tips for natural relief of symptoms upon the appearance of eczema:
- Avoid scratching the skin
Itching is very unpleasant, but scratching can damage the skin and make the condition of eczema even worse. It is significantly better to prepare cold compresses, which can have a beneficial effect in the case of itching. Cotton gloves can be used to prevent younger children scratching while they sleep.
- Recognise potential triggers
The skin always reacts to certain factors or a combination of them. In order to more easily identify them and work out what is causing the worsening of the condition or a flare-up of eczema, it makes sense to keep a diary of the condition of your skin. Make a note of all the little things in it, from the quality of your sleep, the food you ate, the stress or situations that marked your day, etc. In as little as a month, you may be able to connect the common denominators that could be key to the onset of eczema.
- Be careful when choosing agents for washing laundry
Choose a washing powder without added fragrances and that is environmentally- friendly. We advise that you use only a third of the recommended amount and extend the washing cycle of the clothes.
- Avoid heat and excessive temperatures
Altough the majority of us prefer to shower using hot water, this does not suit sensitive skin. It is better to shower using lukewarm water and immediately after quench and soothe the skin with our Pristine Forest Body Lotion. To get a good night's sleep, also ensure your bedroom is well ventilated and not too hot.
- Choose airy clothes made of natural materials
It is important to ensure that the skin can breathe, as sweat in the folds of the body can worsen or even provoke eczema.
- Treat your skin to natural and effective care
Ensure you include natural products in your skincare routine that are suitable for relieving skin conditions such as eczema. The Hemptouch product line has been created with sensitive skin in mind. All our products are dermatologically tested and have been confirmed as being suitable for the care of atopic skin.
- Ensure the skin is always moisturised
Moisturised skin is supple, soft and satisfied. Immediately after showering, when the pores are still open and ready to receive the benefits of skincare agents, moisturise it liberally with our Pristine Forest Body Lotion. Apply Hemptouch Therapeutic CBD Skin Balm to the problem areas and when the rash is not present, use Soothing CBD Skin Balm.
Balm for eczema
Skin that is prone to eczema lacks natural moisture retention factors. Disturbances appear in the formation of the protective layer of lipids, which reduces its ability to protect against external influences. The protective layer of the skin weakens, and the bottom layers of the skin are more susceptible to infections due to frequent scratching. This is exactly why Hemptouch Skin Balm is the ideal choice for anti-inflammatory action and additional protection. The 100% natural and effective eczema balm is available in a therapeutic or soothing version. Both ointments are dermatologically tested and suitable for the care of atopic skin, they do not cause unwanted side effects and help the skin to establish long-term solutions for skin problems.
