Azelaic acid is the gentlest acid found among cosmetic ingredients. Until a few years ago, it was primarily used in dermatology.
Nowadays, it has become one of the most sought-after ingredients, as numerous studies have confirmed its positive impact on reducing the visibility of skin spots, fading hyperpigmentation and post-acne marks, and improving skin texture and resilience.
In short, azelaic acid is an ingredient that brings benefits to every skin type, including the most sensitive.
What is Azelaic Acid?
Azelaic acid belongs to the group of dicarboxylic acids. It is found in nature in wheat, rye, and barley, and in the microbiome of our own skin. It is produced by a type of fungus called Malassezia furfur, also known as Pityrosporum ovale, commonly found on human skin.
The acid is suitable for a much wider range of users than salicylic or glycolic acid, due to its structure and not its exfoliating action.
This naturally occurring molecule on our skin has significant potential in addressing many skin conditions affecting appearance, inflammatory processes, aging, and hyperpigmentation, while also acting as supportive care for a healthy skin barrier and balanced epidermal microbiome. It delivers excellent results in conditions like rosacea, acne, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and in fading post-inflammatory spots.
The effectiveness of azelaic acid is supported by over 20 years of research and established use in dermatology.
How It Works
Azelaic acid addresses many different skin conditions and is used for various skin issues due to its gentle and highly supportive action.
- It acts as a very mild peel, helping to unclog pores and improve skin texture.
- It inhibits the synthesis of the enzyme tyrosinase, thereby reducing the synthesis of the skin pigment melanin in melanocyte cells.
- It contributes to the ideal balance of the skin microbiome and reduction of hypersensitivity.
- It acts antioxidatively, contributing to a healthier and more youthful appearance of the skin.
Who Needs Azelaic Acid in Their Skincare?
The numerous benefits of azelaic acid allow for a wide range of uses in skincare. The ingredient is often praised as an ideal solution for uneven skin tone or dark spots, but its beneficial effects in cases of hypersensitivity, redness, and impure complexion should not be overlooked.
Those prone to redness and discomfort due to hypersensitivity can take advantage of azelaic acid, as it can also be used to soothe the skin. It is also suitable for those dealing with rosacea or perioral dermatitis.
It is one of the few active ingredients that can be used during pregnancy, as all these skin changes often occur in response to hormonal changes during this period. Azelaic acid can be a savior when facing outbreaks of pregnancy-induced melasma - hormone-triggered hyperpigmentation.
How Perfect Complexion Azelaic Serum Works
The concentrated serum primarily reduces redness and dark spots. It regulates melanin production and with regular use prevents the recurrence of pigmented spots. Due to its gentle exfoliating and anti-inflammatory action, it significantly reduces the occurrence of acne and pimples and enhances the appearance of pores.
Exposure to sunlight, hormonal influences, and aging can lead to increased melanin production in the skin and trigger hyperpigmentation. It manifests as dark spots, making the skin look uneven. Perfect Complexion Azelaic Serum is an exceptionally gentle, yet effective serum that combines a complex of active ingredients and extracts that reduce hyperpigmentation at its source and even out the complexion.
