Warmer, sunnier days are well underway, and with summer just around the corner, it’s more important than ever to ensure our skin is properly protected from the sun’s harmful effects.
Did you know that sun exposure can cause skin damage in as little as 15 minutes? Even a short time in the sun without protection can lead to burns and long-term skin damage. That’s why it’s essential to start thinking about sun protection well before summer reaches full swing.
Why is sun protection so important?
The sunlight that reaches Earth is made up of different types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, including UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn, mainly affecting the skin’s surface, causing redness, swelling and pain. UVA rays, on the other hand, penetrate deeper into the skin and accelerate ageing by damaging collagen and elastin, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.
But beyond the short-term impact of sunburn, UV rays can also cause long-term skin damage. These include hyperpigmentation, fine lines, increased dryness and damage to connective tissues. Prolonged sun exposure without protection increases the risk of developing skin cancer, as UV radiation damages the DNA of skin cells, which can trigger uncontrolled cell growth.

While everyone is vulnerable to UV rays, some people are at greater risk. Children, with thinner and more delicate skin, and those with fair skin, freckles or red hair have less natural protection. Older adults are also more susceptible, as their skin is thinner and less resilient.

How do UV rays work, and when is protection most important?
As mentioned earlier, UV rays are made up of both UVA and UVB radiation. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage the dermis, while UVB rays affect the skin’s surface and are responsible for sunburn.
UV radiation is strongest between 10am and 4pm, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. During these hours, it’s especially important to avoid prolonged sun exposure, apply a high-quality SPF more frequently, wear protective clothing, and, where possible, seek natural shade.

Sun protection is essential even on cloudy days, as UV rays can still penetrate cloud cover and damage the skin. When we talk about applying SPF all year round, we’re particularly referring to the face, which is constantly exposed to sunlight. Regardless of whether it’s autumn, winter, spring or summer, applying SPF to your face every single morning should become a non-negotiable part of your routine.
Top tips for effective sun protection
So, how can you protect your skin from harmful UV rays? Follow these simple tips – your skin will thank you:
- Apply SPF regularly: Use a product with at least SPF 30. Apply 15–30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours. Don’t forget often-overlooked areas such as ears, neck and the backs of your hands.
- Wear protective clothing: Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved clothes, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with UV protection.
- Limit sun exposure: Stay in the shade during peak hours, and keep your time in direct sunlight short and safe.

Natural ways to protect and repair the skin
Mineral filters (such as zinc oxide), used in the Hemptouch Mineral Shield Face Sunscreen formulation, are among the most effective and natural ways to protect the skin from UV rays. Unlike chemical filters, which absorb into the skin, zinc oxide sits on the skin’s surface and reflects UV rays. This means mineral (physical) protection starts working immediately after application and offers broad-spectrum defence against both UVA and UVB rays.
Mineral sunscreen is especially suitable for sensitive or blemish-prone skin, as it’s gentle and far less likely to cause irritation or inflammation compared to chemical filters, which can clog pores and aggravate breakouts. What’s more, mineral protection is suitable for all skin types, as it contains no harsh chemicals that could trigger allergies or sensitivity.
Your skin is your greatest asset—don’t let UV rays compromise it. Just one instance of unprotected sun exposure can trigger long-term skin damage.
