What are conventional cosmetics anyway?
You have probably heard of the term ‘conventional cosmetics’ by now, considering it’s been appearing on the market with increasing frequency lately. It usually stands for low-cost cosmetic products based on synthetically derived ingredients that tend to have a superficial and short-term effect on the skin. It’s therefore worth paying a little more attention and being more curious when picking cosmetic products and reading their list of ingredients.
What are the differences between natural and conventional cosmetics?
As mentioned above, conventional cosmetics usually do not contain natural fats and even if they do, their content is minimal. They can often contain traces of oil derivatives, synthesised molecules, artificial fragrances, colours and preservatives as well. You can familiarise yourself with what the products you use contain by taking a closer look at the list of ingredients on their packaging - your skin will certainly be grateful.
On the other hand, natural cosmetics consist mainly of natural fats, rose water, plant extracts and essential oils. They supply the skin with vitamins, essential fatty acids and antioxidants that support its natural processes. Besides that, they also offer rich nourishing care and protection and promote deep skin renewal. The key difference between the two types of cosmetics lies in their composition. In addition to precious vegetable fats, Hemptouch products are enriched with valuable rose water, plant extracts, essential oils and natural moisturising components that nourish the skin and ensure a lasting balance.
How can I identify unsuitable products?
We need to take our time when shopping for skincare products. If we can be diligent about checking the origin, expiration date and ingredients when buying food, it would do us well to exercise that scrutiny when purchasing cosmetics, too. After all, we are applying it to our biggest organ - skin. The product should therefore not contain any silicones (you can identify them by the -thicone ending), oil derivatives or artificial colours and fragrances.
A longer shelf life can also be one of the clues, since some products contain artificial preservatives that can keep them the same for years. Expiration date must be indicated on the product packaging; if it isn’t, it’s likely not a good idea to buy it.
We can gauge the quality of a cosmetic product’s formulation by its price too, but this is by no means the rule. In most cases, natural products are slightly more expensive due to their unique ingredients, but that’s cancelled out by the fact that they usually need to be applied in much smaller quantities and therefore last longer.
Signs of conventional cosmetics
We often pay too little attention to our choice of cosmetics so complications can quickly arise. Have you ever bought a hand cream to protect your hands from drying out and cracking, only to have it make the situation worse? How many times have you made things worse by applying lip balm? What about a scalp that turns greasy even faster after a wash? These are all signs that the cosmetic products you’re using aren’t suitable; they are usually manufactured to create an increasingly bigger need, which makes the customers use more and more of them with each application. The myth that natural cosmetics are more expensive is, therefore, just that - a myth. Why? Because natural products can be applied in smaller quantities and their effect will be far greater than the one achieved with large quantities of conventional products.
Natural cosmetics for the whole body
Another characteristic of natural cosmetics is that product batches are never exactly the same. Fluctuations and changes in nature lead to changes in the colour, smell and texture of the products too. Our customers sometimes notice a difference in consistency of a balm, a change in smell or a different shade, but all of these changes just further prove that the products are natural, and therefore reflect the fluctuations of nature.
Hemptouch has developed many different products targeting various skin problems. You can choose among a great variety of them, all united by a common thread - hemp. Depending on the purpose of the treatment, you can choose between individual products and care sets. When it comes to proper skin care, we should not overlook the scalp. Our Gentle Hydrolate Shampoo does not contain any artificial foaming agents (we can recognize them as Sodium Laureth Sulphate or SLS) and is based entirely on hemp hydrolate, hempseed oil and a combination of essential oils that promote healthy growth and shiny, strong hair. Its formula is free of artificial foaming agents that can put unnecessary stress on the scalp and hair; instead, we used natural extracts as its cleansing base, and they do their job splendidly. We also suggest using a lotion to pamper your skin after a shower or a bath. Pristine Forest Body Lotion relaxes and moisturises the skin with its nourishing formula and it’s suitable for babies and pregnant women as well.
