NaTrue or Natural Organic Cosmetics Association is an international standard for natural cosmetics. It is a non-profit association whose main goal is to unify the standards for natural and organic cosmetics. The main goal of the association is to restore and strengthen the consumer trust, which have increasingly received misleading advertising from manufacturers. For one thing, many advertised their conventional products as natural and organic and gave them misleading names.
The NaTrue certificate assures total transparency of the origin and the entire process of production from the raw materials to ingredients used in the product. Their experts examine all ingredients closely and the certificate provides an assurance that the product does not contain any artificial or genetically modified materials.
The certificate has demanding criteria
- a minimum proportion of natural ingredients and a maximum proportion of ingredients of natural origin
- only ‘soft’ processing operations of natural raw materials are allowed each raw ingredient is checked - both the origin as well as each step of the production process
only natural, naturally derived and naturally identical ingredients are allowed - ingredients of synthetic origin are not allowed
- GMO ingredients are not allowed
- the proportion of natural ingredients does not include water (which would artificially inflate the ‘naturalness’)
