The skin is an organ of stress: Dermatitis and CBD

Content:

Last weekend we visited the Dermatology Weekend in Portorož, where a meeting of dermatovenerologists took place. Over the course of the two days, there were many thematic lectures that further broadened our horizons and gave us an important insight into the current knowledge, research and supporting therapies for skin problems such as dermatitis. Surprisingly enough, there are 42,000 people with atopic dermatitis in Slovenia, and this number is growing exponentially worldwide.

The majority of the attendees were dermatologists and pharmacists, so we consider it a great honour to have been welcomed in their midst and for them to have been willing to listen to the potential of hemp-based cosmetics with CBD. It was remarkable because, given the prevalence of dermatitis and the rapidly growing number of people afflicted with it, it became even more important for us to bring the possibility of alleviating their skin problems with CBD cosmetics closer to them.

What is dermatitis?

Dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease that can occur in many variations. The most common forms are atopic and contact dermatitis, but the causes for it vary greatly. In addition to hypersensitivity, other factors - especially certain bacteria on the surface of the skin, such as staphylococcus aureus - also play an important role in the occurrence of dermatitis.

There is more than one type of dermatitis

  • Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. It is often described as a skin barrier disorder. It can occur at any age, but it most commonly develops during childhood and is hereditary. It is accompanied by itching, inflammatory changes, painful ulcers and dry, red skin.
  • Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction that occurs at skin contact with an allergenic substance.
  • Dyshidrotic eczema usually manifests itself as a sudden outbreak of redness, most commonly on the palms and the soles of the feet. It can affect people of any age, though most often those after 40.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis most commonly occurs on the scalp and face and is characterised by white-yellow scales.

Less common variations:

  • Neurodermatitis is manifested in areas of severe itching and is usually caused by elevated stress levels.
  • Nummular dermatitis are round inflammatory rashes that can appear after a skin injury.
  • Stasis dermatitis is caused by poor blood circulation to the skin.
  • Dermatitis neglecta occurs from a lack of hygiene.

Which factors influence the development of dermatitis?

The nervous system extends beyond the nerve endings all the way to the middle layers of the epidermis, closely connecting it to the skin. That is why the skin is often an organ of stress, where the consequences of the condition manifest themselves in various forms of imbalance. The onset or severity of symptoms can thus be influenced by emotional triggers such as stress and shock.

Some other risk factors: certain foods, animal hair, washing powders, cosmetics and chemicals, sweating, dry air, weakened immune system, genetics, environment, asthma, hay fever, allergies, etc.

Endocannabinoid system of the skin

The skin has its own endocannabinoid system. It ensures optimal intercellular communication to keep the skin healthy and in balance. Whenever our endocannabinoid system is affected and unable to maintain homeostasis, endocannabinoid secretion is insufficient and the balance of the system is disturbed. That is when symptoms that indicate impaired function of the skin’s endocannabinoid system most commonly occur. Said symptoms can be those of dermatitis, psoriasis, imbalances in skin oil secretion, eczema and so on.

CBD helps maintain skin balance

The phytocannabinoids from hemp are very similar to the endocannabinoids produced by our bodies. They bind to receptors of the skin’s endocannabinoid system because our body recognises them as its own and accepts them. Phytocannabinoids thus activate the skin’s endocannabinoid system and help restore balance. Cosmetic products containing CBD can offer remarkable support for dry, oily, inflamed and itchy skin. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD is also excellent for the care of skin suffering from atopic dermatitis, psoriasis or excessive sebum secretion. Another unique feature is that they are completely natural, so they do not cause side effects that could put additional strain on the skin.

Since dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease, CBD has an especially positive effect on it due to its anti-inflammatory activity. It alleviates itchiness and redness, which are two of the more prominent dermatitis issues.
